Hidden Allergens to Watch For

These surprise ingredients show up in foods you might not expect.

Casein in "Non-Dairy" Products

Some "non-dairy" creamers and whipped toppings contain casein, a milk protein. The FDA allows the "non-dairy" label if the product contains casein. Always check for milk in the allergen statement.

Lecithin in Chips and Crackers

Soy lecithin is a common emulsifier in salty snacks. It appears in many brands of tortilla chips, crackers, and even some chocolate-covered pretzels.

Wheat in Seasoning Blends

Flavored chips and popcorn often use seasoning blends that contain wheat starch or malt flavoring. Plain versions are usually safer.

Egg Wash on Pretzels

Soft pretzels are often brushed with egg wash before baking for that shiny surface. Hard pretzels are usually egg-free, but check the label.

Tree Nuts in Granola

Granola and granola bars frequently contain almonds, cashews, or walnuts. Even "nut-free" granola may be made in a facility that processes tree nuts.

Sesame in Hummus and Crackers

Tahini (sesame paste) is a core ingredient in hummus. Some crackers and breadsticks also contain sesame seeds or sesame oil.

Allergen Notice Cards

Print these cards and place them at your snack table. They help guests feel safe and let them self-advocate.

How to Use This Guide

Before the Party

Ask your guests (or their parents) about allergies at least a week before the event. Use the planner above to select every allergen that needs to be avoided. The more specific you are, the better your menu will be.

At the Store

Print or screenshot your shopping list. Read every label, even on brands we suggest. Manufacturers change ingredients without warning. Look for "Contains:" statements and also "May contain" or "Made in a facility" warnings.

Setting Up the Table

Place allergen notice cards at each section of the snack table. Keep safe snacks on separate plates from any items that contain allergens. Use clean serving utensils for each dish.

Common Mistakes

Don't assume a snack is safe because it looks plain. Flavored chips, crackers, and even some fruits (like pre-sliced apples with dip) can contain hidden allergens. When in doubt, leave it out or ask the guest directly.
